Amsterdam 750
Amsterdam is preparing for its 750th anniversary in 2025. On October 27, 1275, a small settlement along the Amstel River and its residents were mentioned for the first time by the Count of Holland. Count Floris V granted them freedom to travel through his county without paying tolls. This privilege is seen as the foundation of Amsterdam’s rise and prosperity as a trading power in the 17th century.
From 1300 to 1700, the city expanded its renowned yet notorious trade network and grew from 1,000 to 200,000 residents, absorbing the customs of newcomers. Walking through Amsterdam’s historic center, this history is ever-present.
During this tour, we’ll journey through time, starting at Dam Square—the actual dam in the river where the first residents lived—and follow the traces of urban development. Along the way, we’ll encounter buildings, canals, and cultural remnants shaped by centuries of high and low society, wealth and poverty, slavery and freedom.
